Free Films & Great Books! Frankfurt 2014

The legendary Midnight Sun Film Festival, and Rosebud Books, bookshops and publishing house from Finland, are coming to the Frankfurt Bookfair. Finnish film directors Peter von Bagh and Aki Kaurismäki will be visiting the Frankfurt Bookfair, starting on 8 October.

Aki Kaurismäki: Le Havre

Peter von Bagh will be talking about his Aki Kaurismäki biography on Wednesday 8 Oct at 12:00 in the Guest of Honour Pavilion; Finland Pavilion, Forum 1 at the Fair. This book has come out in German, Kaurismäki über Kaurismäki, published by Alexander Verlag. Suomeksi kirja löytyy täältä.

The Midnight Sun Film Festival and Rosebud have published a grand masterpiece of Film Art, Festival Director von Bagh's book based on the interviews of the main guests at the festivals in English. Sodankylä Forever – Masters of Cinema Under the Midnight Sun will be available at the bookfair: ISBN 978-952-5675-97-9, 430 pages. Including colour & b/w photos. Rosebud 2014. Finnish films from classics to contemporary documentaries will be screened 9.–11. Oct at 7 and 9.15 pm at Orfeo's Erben art house movie theater, Hamburger Allee 45. Aki Kaurismäki and Peter von Bagh will be hosting this event – courtesy of the Midnight Sun Film Festival.

The first film screened on Thursday at 7 pm, introduced by von Bagh, will be The White Reindeer (1952). Admission free. A true classic! A newlywed woman goes to the local shaman to get some help with her lovelife, but instead gets turned into a white reindeer vampire.

Deutsches Filminstitut, Schaumainkai 41, will be screening Finnish films this autumn. Kaurismäki retrospective series started in already September, and Finnish films will also be shown long after the fair.
